Being someone who majors in such a course and grew up with this language, I find it hard to be forgiven when someone (anyone, it could be you.) cannot get their hanyu pinyin right.
If you're a non-Chinese, it's actually commendable for you to piece out hanyu pinyin, even if it is incorrect like "chiang pi" by Mister Gobinathan.
If you're a Chinese, it annoys me whenever I see an incorrect hanyu pinyin from you. Yea it's hanyu pinyin, not hanyu pingying.
I do face this similar problem, so while I cannot forgive myself for not being able to decide if a word ends with 'n' or 'ng', I must find the right answer, save it in my head before I let the whole world see my flawed hanyu pinyin.
I almost blabbered about the linguistics stuff which I learned last semester, but I think only Miss Moon the next ANTM would be able to understand.
No offence here by the way, maybe I'm just picky. :)
